Started to learn (properly) about Subversion

Maybe not hugely creative but necessary knowledge anyway. And with the immininent departure of our resident command-line guru, it’s sort of a self-preservation measure too. Should know it anyway though…

Started hunting for a song text

for the choral piece that’s to be my project to begin this weekend. I’m thinking a psalm, but using both Latin and English versions, mixed up together.

Listened to Stravinsky

… conducting Les Noces, Symphonies of Wind Instruments and Symphony of Psalms, from the CD set I bought yesterday – amazing. Also transcribed a bunch of notes I made on the Walt Whitman prose works I’ve been reading, napped and played through two levels of Lego Indiana Jones. And the evening’s not done yet! Now, which CD to listen to while I read the next chapter of the Twyla Tharp book?

Too many to fit in a title!

A productive day! I’ve started reading and making notes on Walt Whitman’s essays, via my iPod Touch. I typed up and did a rough edit of an article I’m working on. Spent 25 minutes on the 2nd Whitman song in which I managed to iron out all its rhythmic niggles. Balanced my petty cash. And right now I’m installing the Pro Tools Snow Leopard upgrade so the MBox will be installed so I can set up Hyperscribe to allow me to improvise directly from the piano into Finale. Not bad!

Reading and reviewing

Over the past week I’ve managed to clear about 20 items off my read/review list. It’s a long list and there’s still 127 things in there (and that’s not counting whatever’s lurking in my RSS reader or the hard-copy file!) but it’s great to feel it decreasing a bit.

Assessed accounting software

Alas, yes. For many I suspect this wouldn’t count as creative activity, however it was all a learning experience, and quite aside from learning what I want in an accounting programme (multiple currency support, budgeting, loan tracking, import of bank statements and export of proper accountant reports), I learnt a lot about website design for software and the sorts of first impressions that totally put me off. Very valuable experience for the super-secret project, I suspect!

Worked a bit more on some genealogy stuff

We had a letter from the Seychelles government which confirms more detail about my naughty great-grandfather, Alfred Rowley: He was born in Stoke-on-Trent in about 1875. Huzzah! So now trying to find the right person then will head to the library in a few days to see if I can find some census records or something.

Got some reading done

When the quiet carriage finally turned quiet and the free WiFi was once again accessible, I made a planned attack on my read/review file. A few interesting articles in there – personal branding, getting people reading your content other than just viewing your page, alternative income streams. All sorts of stuff.

Set up my mobile for the web

Yes, I finally got email working on my phone and can now email in tasks to Remember the Milk, and photos to either Evernote or flickr. Yay!

The reasoning behind this was that if I’m to programme for the mobile web, I guess I really should have used it at least a little bit, eh?

Did some research

For the collaborative project I’m working on with a friend. This involved looking into the new Google Android operating system for mobile phones and wandering about learning about Mobile Web Servers. Interesting stuff!
