Have spent a ridiculous amount of time today trying to back up excess photos to CD in a bid to make my computer run faster. First I went through 5 of the discs we had, none of which would validate, however many of the internet’s “solutions” I tried. Then I went up the road and bought a spindle of Verbatims, which seemed fine and I ripped 6 of them, but now they’re throwing the same error. Grr. Thinking it might be a heat thing, so I’ll leave the next lot till after the laptop’s had a chance to cool down, I think – but at least I’ve already saved about 5Gb of hard drive space!

Took an SD card up to Jessops and played around with some cameras. The Canon G10 is still the clear leader – the Nikon P90 has an amazing 24x zoom and is incredibly light, but on closer inspection the pictures lack zing and are quite noisy. The Canon SX10 IS I felt was a bit heavy, but it seemed to be taking nice photos! Very wierd. The chap in the shop is going to recharge one of the other Nikons so I can test that tomorrow, but I suspect the G10 may be the winner. Jessops have it for £414 but Amazon have it for £357… and PC World has it for £449.99. I can’t believe the price differences! And none of them seem to be offering anything different really – just the basic camera pack. So it’s back there tomorrow to test the other Nikon and probably to recheck the G10 for a couple of test shots I didn’t get and recheck the weight of the SX10. Then it’ll be decision-time…

We’d been meaning to go to Wales but couldn’t work out where we wanted to go, so in the end we went to Stokesay Castle, an impressive early fortified manor in fabulous condition, and then sort of made things up as we went along – Clun Castle, Dolforwyn Castle, and then to Powis Castle which unfortunately was closed, but we’ve made a note that we definitely want to go back there. At Powis, a large herd of red deer watched us drive slowly up the driveway, and then a herd of smaller (possibly fallow) deer were on the hillside as we walked back to the car. I stalked them gently with my camera, and when djeli got bored and started to drive down towards me, the sound of the car evidently startled a great red stag. Absolutely stunningly gorgeous. So beautiful. We almost ran over a pheasant leaving the grounds, but fortunately he flopped out of the way in time. Came home and played Carcassonne The Castle in the evening, just to continue the theme. I thrashed djeli soundly, both times

Taking photos all the way. Negotiated the Belgian train system, went to Het Gravensteen (castle), a couple of interesting art exhibitions in an old monastery and spent hours and hours just wandering the streets drinking it all in and taking tons of photos. Oh, and had the best coffee in the world ever. Mmmm. And did some knitting in the evening too.
