Spent some time with Djelibeybi

And good golly, it’s been a long time since we just hung out together on our own. Parents went off to see the London Wetlands Centre (and gave it two very enthusiastic thumbs up – must get there sometime) and I did some doodling about trying to make the notes I have turn into a proper opening for the quintet (fail) then Djeli and I sauntered into town to inspect microwaves. We didn’t actually buy anything, but we came away with knowledge and a ball of wool for me to knit myself a therapeutic hat with (Auntie Madge’s Wisp scarf is driving me insane – the point at which I thought I’d nearly finished turned out to only be halfway there so I need something different to knit – a quick win – before I start in on my mother’s scarf which is a chunky-weight chenille version of the Wisp pattern). Then Djeli made his fantastic shepherd’s pie for us for dinner and we all watched My Family and Other Animals and then Slumdog Millionaire. All in all, a tip-top day :-)

Quietly productive

Didn’t get as much done today as yesterday – slept in far too late, which was a bit of a whoops – but my parents and I do seem to have settled into a quietly productive sort of a routine – for the mornings anyway, which is working quite well – for me at least, and I hope for them too. It goes something like this: Once I’ve woken up, I sit up in bed and do my morning pages, then I read a bit more of John Adams’ autobiography, Hallelujah Junction, which I’m absolutely loving. Then I drag my sorry carcass out of bed and greet the lovely parents and have breakfast. I then take my coffee back into the bedroom and start work on some of my theory study while the mama inhabits the study and plays the piano for a little. The afternoon is a little more freeform, but at some point I take over the study and do some listening and some work in there.

Today’s theory study was seventh chords exercises. I found these relatively challenging – it’s the diminished intervals I have to fully get my head around, but the exercises are being very useful – not just building a specified seventh chord on a tonic, but also on the third, fifth and seventh as given notes, which I’m finding VERY helpful for working out the intervals because it’s not as simple as just altering the notes above – you need to work out sometimes whether your actual tonic needs to be raised or lowered. Really makes one think, which is exactly what I needed. Think I’ve got them sorted in my brain now. More or less at least :-)

Did some more work on the site too. Unfortunately, it seems that of the web-fonts-supporting major browsers, only Firefox and Safari understand the text-rendering property, which means that the kerning on the fancy font I’m using in a couple of places is all off in Chrome. I’ve yet to test it on IE in its many flavours. Not sure how/if to hack this one. For Chrome it should be relatively simple – there aren’t too many seriously problematic letters, so one could just surround the tricky sections in <span>s and apply letter-spacing, hopefully, but I’m not sure how IE will react. Yes, I still have to do proper testing in IE. Have been avoiding it. Need to stop that.

Also nearing the end of the scarf I’m knitting for my chilly and very frail great-aunt in Sydney. She’s 94 now and apparently they keep her nursing-home at an Arctic temperature at all times of the year, so I’m knitting her a nice lightweight scarf to keep her warm. I spent a lovely quiet half-hour with my Da this evening in the study, listening to the Mendelssohn string quintets and Schubert’s Moments musicaux, him reading his book and me working on the scarf – happiness! I have lent him Art & Fear which he seems to be finding interesting, as I thought he might.

Day of not-very-much-at-all

I knitted. I listened to Fauré. I napped. I greeted our landlord and handed him some boxes of stuff he was taking away. I greeted the man bringing home our Roomba. I napped. I made dinner. I read about 3 pertinent lines in my PHP book. I caught up with some blog-posting.

Most of all though, I procrastinated. Big-time. And it felt good :-)

More knitting

but… ah ha! Not all the same knitting as before. I’m back to working on djeli’s scarf which is my first illusion knitting project and this evening I’ve finished the first pattern repeat. On the down side, it doesn’t look as effective as we’d hoped. On the plus side though, I managed to improve the less-than-clear chart so that it became much easier going. Djeli’s going to think about it overnight and see how he feels about the pattern so I guess tomorrow I’ll know if I’m continuing with this or starting from scratch.

Carried on with the mitten-gloves

Yes, there’s been a lot of knitting lately! Mostly because it’s about all my brain can handle. Yesterday the physio told me my ankle may take up to a year to heal properly – that’s a lot of sitting around. Might as well make it productive sitting around…

Chatted for 2 1/2 hours

with a friend who lives in Paris – lovely random chat. Haven’t done anything like that in ages. Rest of the day was similarly relaxed – slept in, listened to music (Ravel, Faure, Elgar, etc), made big progress on djelibeybi’s hat (very nearly up to the crown shaping), made mushroom soup. And at the end of it am very nearly feeling human again. Shame I don’t have another day off – feeling very close to capable of writing some music, but I think it’d take another sleep to actually get there… when of course I’ll have to go back to work. *sigh*

Caught up on some sleeping

with a much-needed 4-hour nap. Also had a massage to counter the tension headache, which has been quite horrific this week, baked oatmeal scones again, did a bit of work on djeli’s new hat (I’ve passed the turn-up and am on to the hat proper now!) and received the first part of my Amazon order – Wii Fit Plus (which obviously I can’t use until the sprained ankle is sorted out) and 3 Beatles albums – Magical Mystery Tour, Revolver and A Hard Day’s Night – woo! Also had a bash at one of my new Wii games – Lego Indiana Jones – which looks like a heap of fun. A lovely, relaxing day – can’t remember the last time I had one of those!

Started a hat for djeli

Finally back from our Christmas travels during the course of which djeli mislaid his beanie, so I’m starting the hat I promised to knit him and hoping I can finish it nice and quickly.

Bought yarn and needles

to knit a hat and scarf for djelibeybi. Sage green hat and the scarf is going to be sage with a sort of pale silvery-wheaty colour stripe. Should be fun!

More mitten work

Am now halfway up the flip-top of my convertible mittens. Coming along nicely. I think there’s a reasonable chance the first paw could be finished tomorrow.
