Went to the Van Doesburg exhibition at Tate Modern

Some awesome stuff in there, but unfortunately they had major fail when it came to providing seating for the crippled – enormous exhibition, only 2 benches in the whole thing, as far as I could see. I didn’t quite get halfway through it so will have to go back again. At least once. Possibly twice in order to get through the whole of George Antheil’s Ballet mécanique. Why oh why include the whole of a 16-minute film, with only two sets of headphones and nowhere to sit down???

Ventured into South Kensington

Djeli and I went to see the Wallace & Gromit Cracking Ideas exhibition at the Science Museum, which was fun and quite interesting – mostly about copyright and patents with and assortment of clever inventions which have since become essential household items. We dropped in to the Natural History Museum on the way home too – neither of us have ever managed to get there before so we thought we should see what sort of things they have. So we wandered through from one entrance to exit at another and – wow! They’ve got some incredible stuff! Especially dinosaur fossils and so on – and that wasn’t even in the proper dino section! Very much looking forward to going back.

Went on a tour of the Tate Modern’s oil tanks

Yup. Oil tanks. They’re going to be part of the new development there and this was the last chance to see them before building starts. One of them’s going to be an auditorium – will be interesting to see how that turns out – interesting acoustics! We weren’t allowed to take any photos but I took some hopefully nice shots of St Paul’s etc from the balcony of the members’ loung afterwards. Also went to see the Pop Life exhibition which was pretty interesting.

Saw the Corot to Monet exhibition

At the National Gallery with some friends. Some interesting work but overall not as exciting as other exhibitions I’ve seen there. Certainly nice to see friends though!

Waited in line for four hours

… to get into the Banksy vs Bristol Museum exhibition. Yes, it was definitely worth it.

A dose of pre-raphaelitism

My friend Sam has been travelling, and I finally caught up with her today in her last few hours before catching her plane back to Australia. Much chat of a superior quality was revelled in and we trotted along to the Royal Academy to see their J.W. Waterhouse show. Some very fine paintings there, but also quite a lot of sketches, which I always find particularly interesting – a number of sketchbooks and also sketch-studies for various paintings. Well worth the entry fee.

Visited a mammoth

Went to the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre to see their mammoth, then to the Museum of the Gorge. Both pretty good. I think the Shropshire Hills one was probably a bit more interesting. It had a fair bit on the geology and earlier history of the area. And, of course, a mammoth!

Learned how to do a proper court curtsey

At the “Last Debutantes” exhibition at Kensington Palace. Very interesting! Some great 1950s clothes. Also had a lovely walk through Holland Park on the way home.

Went to the Sisley in England and Wales exhibition

At the National Gallery. Interesting. I didn’t really know his work, but some nice stuff there. He seemed a bit uncertain as to what to do with the English light or lack thereof in the earlier ones, but the later Welsh seascapes are beautiful.
