Played Lego Indiana Jones for Wii
One of my Christmas presents and the first chance I’ve really had to unwind and just play – for three hours. Just what was needed.

It’s a book on creativity by Twyla Tharp and I’m finding it very interesting – so many creativity books are written from a writer’s perspective so it’s great to see one coming from the point of view of a performing artist. Looking forward to chapter two!

I decided on the way home this evening, after contemplating and discarding a number of approaches (including a new, anonymous blog, which then raised the question of how do you promote an anonymous blog?) that I’m going to start creating the occasional longer post for this blog, addressing various topics to do with creativity, productivity and related topics. I’m hopefully going to post the first one on the weekend, but for now, I’ve written a letter to explain what on Earth I’m thinking…

Twyla Tharp’s The Creative Habit: Learn it and use it for life which I’ve been salivating over on Amazon for quite some time, and which has made it to my house at long last thanks to an Amazon gift voucher Christmas present from a lovely friend (also Wii Fit Plus which I can’t wait to go on once the wretched sprained ankle is fixed!). First thoughts: Ooh, nice typography!

Trying to get back to music but my brain is resisting so I’m sneaking up on it, starting with playing the piano. Discoveries: the piano is very, very dusty, John Field’s Nocturnes would sound a whole lot better with a working pedal, and Howard Skempton is, in the main, more forgiving of a bung pedal than the esteemed Mr Field.

but… ah ha! Not all the same knitting as before. I’m back to working on djeli’s scarf which is my first illusion knitting project and this evening I’ve finished the first pattern repeat. On the down side, it doesn’t look as effective as we’d hoped. On the plus side though, I managed to improve the less-than-clear chart so that it became much easier going. Djeli’s going to think about it overnight and see how he feels about the pattern so I guess tomorrow I’ll know if I’m continuing with this or starting from scratch.

I’ve read a lot lately about a productivity technique called the pomodoro technique which I’ve been thinking could be useful as a way of organising myself into some more regular composition. So I gave it a go today while working from home and I have to say first impressions are quite positive. I’m definitely going to continue the experiment.

Yes, there’s been a lot of knitting lately! Mostly because it’s about all my brain can handle. Yesterday the physio told me my ankle may take up to a year to heal properly – that’s a lot of sitting around. Might as well make it productive sitting around…

with a friend who lives in Paris – lovely random chat. Haven’t done anything like that in ages. Rest of the day was similarly relaxed – slept in, listened to music (Ravel, Faure, Elgar, etc), made big progress on djelibeybi’s hat (very nearly up to the crown shaping), made mushroom soup. And at the end of it am very nearly feeling human again. Shame I don’t have another day off – feeling very close to capable of writing some music, but I think it’d take another sleep to actually get there… when of course I’ll have to go back to work. *sigh*

with a much-needed 4-hour nap. Also had a massage to counter the tension headache, which has been quite horrific this week, baked oatmeal scones again, did a bit of work on djeli’s new hat (I’ve passed the turn-up and am on to the hat proper now!) and received the first part of my Amazon order – Wii Fit Plus (which obviously I can’t use until the sprained ankle is sorted out) and 3 Beatles albums – Magical Mystery Tour, Revolver and A Hard Day’s Night – woo! Also had a bash at one of my new Wii games – Lego Indiana Jones – which looks like a heap of fun. A lovely, relaxing day – can’t remember the last time I had one of those!
